Understanding the SAP EWM Inbound Process: From ASN to Putaway

Efficient inbound logistics is the foundation of any well-run warehouse. SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) provides robust tools to manage inbound processes with accuracy, transparency, and speed.

Overview of the Inbound Process

The SAP EWM inbound process typically starts with the creation of an Advanced Shipping Notification (ASN) or inbound delivery in SAP S/4HANA. This document contains critical information such as material details, quantities, packaging, and expected arrival time.

Once the inbound delivery is replicated to EWM, warehouse operations can begin.

Goods Receipt in SAP EWM

Goods Receipt (GR) can be posted using desktop transactions or RF devices. Depending on warehouse design, GR may be posted at delivery level or handling unit (HU) level.

HU-managed warehouses provide better traceability and reduce manual errors during putaway and picking.

Warehouse Tasks and Putaway

After GR, Warehouse Tasks (WTs) are created automatically or manually based on configuration. SAP EWM supports multiple putaway strategies, including:

  • Fixed bin putaway
  • Open storage putaway
  • Capacity-based putaway
  • Storage type search sequences

These strategies help optimize space utilization and reduce travel time.

Business Benefits

  • Faster inbound processing
  • Improved inventory accuracy
  • Reduced manual effort using RF
  • Better visibility into stock movements

A well-configured inbound process ensures materials are available for downstream operations without delays.
